I have been wanting to give my powder room a little refresh. It is a very tiny space (37.5” wide x 86.5” long) and does not have a window… the lack of natural light makes it feel even smaller. (To help with the lack of natural light, I do use THESE light bulbs – they are clear and come in a daylight bright version- which is the one I use.)
When I updated the space almost a year ago, I wanted it to have a more clean lined modern vibe. Let’s take a look at what the half bathroom looked like when we bought the house.
When I update the space, I painted the all in one vanity top (that was an almond color) to a nice bright white. I have the details on how I painted the vanity and sink HERE. I then painted the vanity black and used black and brass hardware accents. While I love the look, it just felt too dark and heavy for the space.
The other day, it was a very cold and rainy day… and I decided it was the perfect time to do a spur of the moment update on the half bathroom. I was able to make the changes using only paint products and it only took a few hours. I have been been testing out paint colors for my- soon to come-kitchen updates … so I used the sample paint of my favorite kitchen color- Behr Sculptor Clay- sample and painted the vanity. I have all the details on how I paint cabinets HERE. I prepped the cabinet and I was able to completely cover the vanity with just two coats!
Once the vanity was dry I started on the hardware update. I had Rub ‘N Buff on hand in several gold colors. Rub ‘N Buff is a great way to update many surfaces with a metallic finish. It is great for use on frames, crafts, antiques, home decor and more! Any surfaces I want to ensure more durability on… I simply seal with 1-2 light coats of my favorite matte sealer, linked HERE.
I tested out the Rub ‘N Buff colors first on some scrap card stock. I wanted to get close to the color of the gold mirror I already had in the space. I ended up using a combination of the colors: Gold Leaf, European Gold, and Antique Gold. I premixed the colors on a disposable plate and then I applied the Rub ‘N Buff with a small craft paint brush. I ended up applying it to the towel ring, toilet paper holder, toilet handle and the faucet and drain plug. For the faucet and drain plug, I did spray with two light coats of a matte sealer to protect it even further from the constant water exposure and use.
These few simple changes made a huge impact. The space feel so much bigger, lighter and brighter…. totally the look I love and wanted for this space.
Sometimes it takes a few tries to “get it right” (in decor and in life) and that is absolutely OK!
Here are links to items in the space and more details:
•hardwood floors are original to the home, they are oak, but I do not have any info on the stain, etc.
