I wanted to add pendant lights to our deck since the build was complete over two years ago. You can find all the details on our deck build HERE. The shades I wanted have been out of stock or unavailable to ship for quite some time.
I found a few great alternatives that are battery powered, but they wouldn’t work over my dining table since we have a fan above it for air circulation, and there wasn’t a place to secure the attached battery pack.
These are the battery powered options I was looking at:
I checked on the Ikea website again and the pendant shades were finally back in stock and available to ship to me. (The closest Ikea to me is about 3 hours away – so shipping was the best option.)
These are the shades I ordered. I bought four total, two for each side of my outdoor living space- to hang above the end tables.
I found these rechargeable lights that charged via USB cable. I ordered the 4 pack. They came with remotes, charging cables and caribiner hooks. I charged them using the included USB cables while I worked on the shades.
As I was pretty sure these weren’t intended for outdoor use, I started by spraying the shades with this water repellent spray. This is the same spray I use on my outdoor furniture, cushions, pillows , umbrellas and more! I sprayed the inside and outside of the shades and let dry.

Once dry, I tied sisal rope to the top of the pendant shades with a simple knot.

Then I held them up and decided on placement. I used these hanger hooks and I spaced mine about 12.5 inches apart. I attached my hooks to the rafters of the roof of my covered deck, pre-drilling first.

I then hung the shades from the rope and adjusted the height staggering them- one slightly higher than the other.

I attached the rechargeable bulbs using the included caribiner hooks to the metal bar at the top of the woven shades.

Then, turned them on using the included remotes.

They out off a nice amount of light. The remote also allows for them to be set on a timer too!
Another plus, I can easily unhook the bulbs from the shade for charging as needed.
I plan to use this same technique to add a pendant shade over my outdoor dining table.
You could also use this same idea inside for a space where you don’t have any hardwiring.
These are the items I used:
