Budget friendly master bathroom update- no demo needed!

While I loved the overall look of my master bathroom… there were a few issues we have been living with for over a year. Last year, when we have our master bathroom floors replaced, we had multiple issues….that’s a whole different story for another day. The first installers not only did a horrible job installing the new floor,  but they also damaged our cabinet paint and countertops. We had do have an entire separate crew come and demo the “new” floor and reinstall it, so the least of my worries at the time was by scratched up paint on my vanity cabinets and epoxy painted countertops. I knew I could fix those. It has only taken me almost a year to get around to it!!!😱

The bathroom before the updates.

The main changes I will be making will be to the vanity, the existing hardware, installing a new ceiling light, new faucets and new drop in sinks.

My master bathroom mood board.

I will be keeping the focal wall, which I hand stenciled. I have all the details on how I did the Chevron focal wall HERE.

Several months ago, I had already purchased the new ceiling semi-flush mount light and a gorgeous shower curtain with a white background and neutral tone subtle stripe. These two pieces set the tone for the rest of the space.
Since I had to repaint the vanity,  I decided I wanted to go with a more neutral color scheme. I loved the green, but wanted something a little more versatile. Whites, woods and neutrals are my true loves. I think if you keep your main big pieces neutral then you can add pops of color through accents (rugs, floral stems, etc).

The new ceiling light.
The new shower curtain.

After some back and forth and LOTS of paper swatches, I ended up choosing Sherwin Williams Mindful Gray. I had it mixed at my local Lowe’s Home Improvement store in their cabinet paint. I have never used this paint before, but many have told me they love it! Since I had painted the vanity before and would be using different paint, I lightly sanded the vanity with 220 grit sandpaper, cleaned it well afterward and then applied one coat of primer to give the new paint a fresh surface to adhere to. I followed the instructions on the can of cabinet paint when I painted it on the vanity.

To fix the countertop, I initially planned to replace it with a prefab laminate countertop with a marble look, but was afraid my 30+ year old cabinets may not hold up to the removal of the old countertop. So I went with plan B… I used my favorite heavy duty peel and stick film that I used in my kitchen over 3 years ago. While it is not a forever fix, it has been a very durable temporary update in my kitchen.

The peel and stick film I use.

To make installation of the peel and stick film easier, I first removed the sinks. My husbands had a large crack at the back, near the faucet area, so this was the best time to apply the film AND replace the sinks.  I applied the film starting with the backsplash first (sides first then the back). I left about 1/4″ extra to allow for some overlap. I then I applied the large main piece on the vanity top. Once the main piece was on, I cut the holes for the sinks- I found it easier to cut from the underside along the edge of the sink cutout. I then trimmed the excess from the front edge using my utility knife.

After it was in place, I installed the new faucets on each of the new sinks then installed the sinks- securing in place with 100% clear silicone adhesive. I finished connecting the plumbing for the new faucets.

Next step- update the current hardware and vanity lights. The current ones were in great shape… but needed a different metal finish. So I went with my favorite and affordable option- SPRAY PAINT!! Rustoleum is my go to brand. It has great long lasting coverage and comes in so many colors and finishes.  I chose the Rustoleum Imagine Metallic finishes in gold. I first cleaned all the hardware and light fixtures to remove any dust or grease/oils. I then applied one coat of primer.

Once the primer was dry, I applied two light coats of the Rustoleum Imagine Gold, drying thoroughly between coats and making sure to cover all sides.

Then I applied one coat of the Rustoleum Imagine matte sealer to give a super durable finish. Once all the hardware was dry, I reinstalled the lights and hardware.

You can purchase the Rustoleum Imagine Spray paints at Joann or Do It Best stores.

I added a few decorative accents and the bathroom was complete!!!

You can give a space a fresh new look without a total gut job or breaking the bank!
