Wood Planter Box

September 12, 2021 in Decor

One of my most asked about projects was the wood planter boxes I created a couple of years ago. I made them super quick for my The Cottage Journal magazine photo shoot and didn’t have time to do a tutorial at the time.

I made new ones and I love them even more than the originals! I created them using durable exterior grade wood from Yellawood, so I know they will hold up to all the elements. The wood planter I created is almost like a slipcover for an existing planter. This not only saves tons of soil, but also keeps the soil IN THE POT- rather than slipping out through cracks- and the wood will hold up even longer!
I made this to fit over the current planters I have on my porch.

My front porch planters I will using to base measurements off of.
Mine are 16” in diameter at the largest part.

I will share those measurements based on my planter size, but you may need to adjust those to fit your planters.

What you will need: (for ONE planter box)

WOOD:

  • 4- 8 ft long dog ear fence boards
  • 2- 1x2x8
  • 2- 2x2x8

Tools:

  • Miter/ chop Saw
  • Drill with bits and driver
  • Exterior screws (1 1/4” and 2 1/2”)
  • Wood glue
  • sandpaper
  • stain (if staining)

Directions:

  1.  I first cut the fence boards down to size. I cut mine to 23”. I used three cut boards per side.

2. I then cut 1×2 boards to make the horizontal support pieces. Mine are cut to 16.75” each. I cut two per side… one for the top and one for the bottom.

3. I then lined up three cut fence boards and placed the cut 1×2 on the top and bottom of each set of three boards to create one side. I used glue and the 1 1/4” exterior wood screws. Predrilling the holes will help prevent the wood from splitting.

4. Once all four sides are made it’s time to assemble. I double checked the height- mine are 23” tall. I then cut the 2x2x 8 into 23” tall pieces… you will need 4 per planter.

5. Then I attached the 2×2 to the first side of the planter box and secured it the side with wood glue and 2 1/2” exterior wood screws-pre-drilling first.

6. Once the first one was in place I then secured the second side to the 2×2 on the other side .. and continued around until you have created your box.

7. You can then sand and stain or leave to weather naturally.

Let me know if you try this out!I will also be sharing more on my Instagram page @mydiyhappyhome. I hope you’ll come back soon for more DIY’s, home decor, recipes and all the real life in between.

You know the saying …. “Sometimes you have to try all the wrong things before you choose the right one”Yep- that’s me! I am very visual so many times I have to SEE 👀 a color or item in the actual space before I can decide if I like it or not. 🤪

Our entryway doesn’t get much natural light and is small, while I love the green color in the other areas of our home… it felt too dark in the entry.

I repainted the interior of the front door BM Pashmina- it’s the same color as my kitchen island. I already had the paint and it only took me a few hours one morning to do. I love it! The entryway now feels so much brighter and larger.
